Courses are divided into two categories: required and elective. There are no prerequisites at Violand’s Executive Summit, so you can register for any of the courses in any order. You earn a diploma in Small Business Management by completing five required courses and any three electives.
Following is an overview of the courses that are being offered during Violand’s 2008 Executive Summit. Detailed descriptions are printed in the 2008 Course Descriptions brochure.
REQUIRED COURSES
Leading a High Performance Organization
The foundation for sustained growth in any restoration and cleaning business is not based on how well you can clean a carpet or dry a structure. Instead, it is based on the quality of the day-to-day decisions you make, how successfully you get your people to buy in to those decisions, and how well your team executes them. Leaders of high performance companies empower their people to focus on making the decisions that deliver outstanding performance year after year. This program shows you how to build your own high performance cleaning and restoration company using the same discipline Jim Collins wrote about in his book Good to Great, and the same fundamentals Jack Welsh taught thousands of managers at GE’s Croton-on-Hudson training center.
Managing Your Team to Peak Performance
Top performing teams don't get that way on their own. They're carefully developed by managers who know how to get the most from each person and who challenge them to achieve consistently high levels of performance. This course shows you how to get the most from your team by understanding what shapes employee behavior and how to mold it for maximum performance. Understand the roles that power and influence play in managing your team. Learn how to deal with difficult behavior, and how to discipline in a positive manner.
Picking Winners
In a small business, every person you hire will have a significant impact on your company—good or bad. This course shows you how to recruit, evaluate, and hire exceptional people for any position in your company. Learn how to uncover information candidates don't want you to know about them before you hire them...and how to stay out of court while doing so. Discover why you (yes, you) may be the biggest obstacle to finding and hiring great employees, and learn how to change that.
Raging Profits/Fearless Numbers
Forget about debits, credits, and any other confusing or intimidating accounting terms. This course uses everyday English to explain your financial reports, and shows you how to use this information to make decisions in your business that will measurably improve its profitability. You'll see financial models of “best practice” companies, and then learn what you can do to achieve similar results in your own company.
Results Driven Selling
Nothing happens in business until somebody sells something. This course will challenge you to think differently about sales, and may shatter preconceived notions you have about selling. Results Driven Selling is like a double shot of caffeine for your company’s sales team…even if you’re the only person on that team. Discover the hidden reasons why you may be reluctant to make calls…and how to change it. Learn why every sales call isn’t necessarily a good sales call, and why every customer isn’t always a good customer.
ELECTIVE COURSES
Communication for Maximum Impact
Whether we're communicating with a customer, giving instructions to an employee, or listening to a colleague, the better we communicate, the greater our chances for making things work right in our companies. But too often, what's in our head isn't what comes out our mouth. This course will help you learn the key principles of communication excellence. You'll assess your communication strengths and style, discover how your style impacts others, and know how to use this knowledge effectively.
Effectively Dealing with Conflict in the Workplace
Wherever you have two people, you have the potential for conflict...even more so if those two people are family members in business. This course debunks the notion that perception is reality…and shows why that's important in resolving conflicts within your company. Whether it's in your business or in your personal life, Effectively Dealing with Conflict will teach you how to resolve conflicts before they spin out of control.
Negotiating to Win-Win
Unless you’re able to negotiate successfully, it can literally cost you tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. This course will help you develop skills to negotiate effectively with customers, employees, vendors, and adjusters. You’ll learn strategies to prepare for negotiations, identify the elements of a good agreement, know how to defend yourself against common influence tactics, and learn techniques for achieving your own interests and the interests of the other party.
